History and Objectives

Korea University’s Department of English Language and Literature was established in August 1946 as part of the College of Liberal Arts. With our renowned faculty members, we take pride in our 70 years of history and tradition. We offer an array of courses covering studies from classical English literature, modern English literature, American literature, and English linguistics to literature from Ireland and the British Commonwealth of Nations. With international professors, we also offer courses dedicated to English conversation and academic writing to equip students with advanced practical English skills alongside essential academic pursuits.
By providing students with comprehensive knowledge of English language and literature, we aim to cultivate international intellectuals who can contribute to the development of society with their critical and creative thinking and advanced English communication skills.
To realize our goals, we offer a curriculum composed of classical English literature, modern English literature, American literature, and English linguistics.
Our history of more than half a century illustrates that our former faculty has played pivotal roles in the English academic community in Korea. This legacy continues today as current faculty members are also distinguished experts in their respective fields. Based on the understanding of communication through English and knowledge of English language and literature, graduates of the department have entered various career sectors. While some graduates have been hired as professors at universities, others have pursued their careers as poets, writers, and literacy critics. There are also many alumni playing active roles in various areas including but not limited to business, finance, politics, public service, and journalism.
